The Great Avocado Roll Quest

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:22 pm by bethmillett

So this evening I joined my friend Ashley at Sushi on the Rocks (SOTR) in downtown Indy. She’s trying all the sushi restaurants in Indy in search of an avocado roll to match up to the best ones she’s ever had, at a restaurant they visit in Hilton Head whenever they are there. I’ve been wanting to get a little more adventuresome with my sushi (so far, I’m a big fan of California rolls), so I was game to join her. We started with some delicious edamame (after she told me not to eat the pods like I do with sugar snap peas) and then had a delicious plate of sushi rolls delivered. Ash is a vegetarian, so she had avocado and cucumber rolls, while I tried tuna rolls, the New York roll (shrimp, cucumber and avocado) and the dynomite roll — a delicious roll of shrimp, crab, avocado and cucumber deep fried (well, no wonder I liked it!) and served with three spicy sauces. It was delish!

We had a great time gossiping and catching up, and the sushi was great. I’m glad it’s only a few blocks from my office — the next time I’m thinking sushi, I’ll be sure to stop by there! And the tuna roll was great, so maybe I’m ready to graduate to some nigiri sushi, the larger hunks of raw fish not disguised in rice and seaweed wraps.

At the end, my brain got momentarily confused — at my favorite Greek restaurant, everyone is encouraged to shout Opa! whenever the flaming cheese (saganaki) is served. Of course, no one embraces this as heartily as I do — I love going with Robyn or Ellen who are borderline mortified by my enthusiasm. So, as Ashley and I were wrapping up our sushi dinner, a chef set something on fire at the sushi bar, and my brain shouted OPA! Luckily, my mouth was a beat behind and the “abort! abort!” message reached my mouth before I could make a fool of myself.

By the way, Ashley says that SOTR’s avocado roll is currently in second place. I’ve forgotten who she said was first….
