Some fun events in Indy

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:03 am by bethmillett

I do a lot of volunteer (and paid) work for a variety of races around Indy. The 500 Festival Mini Marathon is the nation’s largest half-marathon and overall the eighth largest running event in the U.S. It’s a pretty spectacular event and takes almost a full year of planning and a crew of more than 4,000 volunteers. I work with a team of people as crazy as me — setting up Military Park as the rest and recovery area, where runners cross the finish line, get fluids and food, and meet up with their family and friends. Here I am at 3 a.m. on race day — in the dark and rain but still smiling (and wearing my now famous tiara)…

A couple of weeks later, I volunteered for the inaugural Geist Half Marathon, where I was in charge of the finish line and runners services (where they hand out bananas, cookies, Gatorade, etc.) Then the very next day, I volunteered for the 500 Festival Kids Day, a great, free event for kids and families on the circle downtown. (Though I don’t need to hear the Care Bears sing “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes” again!)

I took Monday off, seeing as how I could barely get out of bed. And maybe this will explain why I haven’t posted to the blog too much lately!
